As our Sig. Tornaghi has already informed you, Verdi arrived in Milan yesterday. I cannot help but tell you, dear Friend, how the impression I received from the Maestro’s letters was a hundred times worse in person. Both Verdi and his Wife are in such a state of agitation that one seriously fears for their health! And it is understandable: having been accustomed to a serene and tranquil life, they find the current controversy to be a hundred, a thousand times more serious in their overwrought imagination, and they suffer the weight of a most anguishing burden, both morally and materially.
Thus their complete peace of mind must be restored without delay, because it is a matter of compelling conscience!
To you then falls the task of moving forward as rapidly as possible; nor need I say more, because you certainly will have understood the extremely particular circumstances in which we find ourselves.
Truth be told, I find it no less revolting than you do to lower our flag before such an unworthy adversary!.. but I would not accept even the most mathematical certainty of victory as compensation for the days of prolonged agitation our great Maestro would be forced to endure.
My renewed thanks for your invaluable assistance, and meanwhile it is again my pleasure to express my utmost respect and friendship.
Yours most sincerely,
Giulio Ricordi
