Alla di Lei oculatezza, e più ancora alla cortese sua amicizia, mi rivolgo esponendo alcune mie idee, intorno all’affare
1°- La Casa fa subito una perdita effettiva! - Verdi potrebbe dire: vediamo il danno ed io lo compenserò, ma…. date le relazioni d’affari coll’illustre Maestro, e quelle particolari che io ho l’onore di avere, è questo un fatto, dirò così, bello e nobile?... e non è impeciato dall’affarismo?
2° = La cessione per parte nostra non porta un danno gravissimo morale al nostro nome?... non è il riconoscimento dei volgari addebiti del Benoit?.. non è una perdita immensa della nostra influenza in Francia, certo, ma forse anche ovunque?...
A Lei il giudicare: certo si è, amico ottimo, che ove io fossi l’unico proprietario della Ditta, non esiterei un momento a cedere ai suggerimenti del cuore, dettati da tutte quelle alte considerazioni che portano il nome e la persona di Verdi. Ma siccome tale qualità in me manca, siccome io sono responsabile verso terzi, i quali pure colla massima deferenza verso il Maestro, non hanno tuttavia quella peculiare posizione che ho io….. così mi domando se devo accarezzare l’idea espressa od abbandonarla.
Ecco il consiglio ch’io Le chiedo, e che per la fiducia che ho in Lei, aspetto fidente, poiché appunto Lei ha le qualità necessarie per valutare legalmente e moralmente le conseguenze avvenire: è problema delicato e che richiede animo delicato a risolverlo.

May I avail myself of your prudent perspective and still more of the courtesy of your friendship to set forth some of my thoughts regarding the Verdi-Ricordi-Benoit affair? Beyond all due consideration of the facts and their legal consequences, I have more often found myself concerned with the moral consequences, so much so that this would be my conclusion: To ensure the complete emotional and physical tranquility of M. Verdi, the Company entirely accepts the harsh conditions imposed by Benoit!... therefore forfeiting our rights, which we consider airtight, for Trouvère and Traviata – and leave it to Verdi only to determine what the amount of such sacrifice should be. My heart would have me see things this way: in fact, there would be no more lawsuit….. no further polemics involving Verdi’s good name! But logically speaking, is this possible?... In considering the great responsibility I have toward the Shareholders and the reputation of the Company, might I be permitted to ponder this idea?.... In fact:
1. The Company would endure an immediate and substantial loss! – Verdi could say: let us see what the damage is and I will make up for it, but…. given my business dealings with the illustrious Maestro, not to mention our personal relationship which I am honored to enjoy, would this be, shall we say, a reasonable and noble solution?... and one not sullied by a concern for profit?
2. Would concession on our part not cause serious moral damage to our reputation?... Would it not be an admission of Benoit’s coarse claims?.. Would it not be an immense loss of influence for us, certainly in France but perhaps everywhere else as well?
I leave it to you to judge: certainly, were I the sole proprietor of the Company, good friend, I would not hesitate a moment to follow the suggestions of my heart, dictated by the many lofty considerations surrounding Verdi’s name and stature. But since I do not have that capacity, since I am responsible to others who also hold the Maestro in the highest esteem but nevertheless are not in my peculiar position… I ask myself whether I should embrace the idea I have expressed or abandon it.
There then is the counsel I seek of you, and which I confidently await because of the trust I have in you, since you have precisely the qualities necessary to evaluate the legal and moral consequences thereof: it is a delicate problem and requires a certain delicacy of spirit to resolve.
