Eg° Sig.n Avvocato

- Afferma cosa non vera, perché tutto quanto si riferisce all’Esposizione, fu riveduto, corretto, approvato dall’On.

Null’altro aggiungo: ho fiducia che l’On.

Avvocato,

di Lei devmo

Giulio Ricordi

Dear Sig. Avvocato [Longhi],

Our personal relations which I have had the honor to enjoy, and the deference that I have shown on numerous occasions toward the Hon. Committee, led me to believe that I would have been able to count at least upon reciprocal courtesy. But I confess that, upon reading this notice in La perseveranza [a blank section of several lines follows, perhaps intended for the contents of the notice], I found myself overcome with bitterness for both the form and the substance.

In fact:

-The title of “official” for the Guide was cancelled, even though it was fully agreed upon between the Hon. committee and our Company, thereby offending the good name and the decorum of the Company itself, almost as if we had arbitrarily decided to tack a title onto the Guide that was not deserved.

-It asserts something that is not true, because everything referring to the Exposition was reviewed, corrected, and approved by the Hon. Committee, whether adding and removing names, repeatedly modifying the personal sketches, the biographical notes, etc. etc., such that the Committee’s interventions were far more than the pure and simple compilation of the Catalogue..!! –

If, in defending the name of the company I have the honor to represent, I were to make all this known to the public, it would be an extremely indelicate and discourteous gesture; but I nonetheless cannot allow the public to imagine G. Ricordi e C. to be nothing more than common, vulgar profiteers!!... I am surrounded by too noble a reputation to remain quiet before such a gratuitous insult. I understand perfectly that the Hon. Committee does not accept the responsibility for publications that could be damaging due to the vicissitudes of critical reception, but that is not applicable to a small volume like the present Guide, which was compiled for all that pertains to the Exposition under the direct intervention of the Committee.

Simply speaking, I must say that the Hon. Committee fails to understand that such a publication, given its size and elegance, does not represent an opportunity for speculation on the part of the Company who took it on, but rather an enormous financial loss, no matter how many copies are sold. What has motivated us more than anything is artistic sentiment, in homage to the Committee and to the exhibition, sustained by the belief that in similar cases private interests must be put aside in favor of those of the citizenry; and what better proof of this than the mere reminder that we have declined to collect all rights belonging to us for the musical performances, which reflects 8 tenths of the programs!! –

Although I have had the honor of relatively little personal interaction with you, it has still been sufficient for me to form an accurate idea of your character, of your distinctive intellectual qualities rendered even more engaging by your unfailing sense of courtesy. This is why I turn to you, in the certainty that not only will you agree that my remonstrance is legitimate, but still better that you will appreciate the sentiment behind it: I am something of a thin-skinned individual, and even the mere suggestion of doubt wounds me.

Nor will I insist upon the fact that the notice could prompt the appearance of other similar publications, causing damage to the person who has agreed to sell the Guide!...

I will add nothing further, trusting that the Hon. Committee will find a way to correct the unfortunate impression of today’s notice with another statement to the press, thereby cancelling the offense that was no doubt involuntarily committed against the Company.

With my humble and heartfelt respects, I remain, dear Sig. Avvocato,

Yours most sincerely,

Giulio Ricordi
