Sig. Ing. Tito Ricordi

Despite the fact that commercial conditions this year have been more disappointing than those of '91, and are therefore the cause of not a few serious concerns for us, we find it only proper not to delay in providing proof of our satisfaction for the enthusiasm you have demonstrated in carrying out the responsibilities with which you have been entrusted. Therefore, from the beginning of 1892, your monthly stipend has been increased to Three hundred Lire.

Please let us know then if you wish to make any proposals regarding the monthly salaries of the Workshop employees; and while allowing in principle that raises should be given to those who deserve them, we must ask you to propose them in modest measure – if for no other reason than to avoid adding too great a burden to the operating budget of the Workshops, which must also absorb additional and considerable travel expenses this year.

Certainly we are always ready to take on those expenses that promise to bear useful fruit; but while they may be justified by industrial considerations, which require improvements and more in order to prevail over inauspicious competition, we must take the rather bleak business climate into account, which reduces our income while expenses grow ever greater.

Consequently, we must urgently insist that you limit expenditures, proceeding with the maximum caution and trimming your budget wherever possible, and even impossible!

We note in this regard that sheet music sales in 1891 were decidedly less, while the total cost of paper appears to have increased. This fact merits serious reflection, since either production for the Music Warehouse is not balanced with actual sales, in which case it is necessary to exercise more caution in ordering reprints; or the paper has been consumed in work for outside clients, in which case we have not yet seen the relative results in payment from them.

Also with reference to outside clients, we believe our accounts with Ditta Erba have not been entirely paid, some of them awaiting terms of agreement from you for their liquidation. Please do not delay this any further, since the Company’s liquidity and our truly serious financial commitments require the regular collection of accounts receivable.

Trusting then that you will immediately see to the recommendations we have made today, may we extend our sincere regards.
