Le compiego il bilancio 1893-94 di codesta filiale. Certo, il risultato è più confortante di quelli del precedente esercizio, non tale però quale sarebbe nel mio desiderio e per certo nel suo. Infatti, se utile c’è, questo è in tale misura che qualsiasi spesa un po’ eccedente nell’ordinario lo ridurrebbe a Zero, per non dire alla passività. So benissimo che una filale a Londra richiederebbe maggior impulso materiale di danaro: ma questo si potrebbe fare qualora l’utile dell’esercizio fosse più largo, ed allora rimunerandosi il capitale congruamente, si potrebbe devolvere il maggior utile a quelle spese di réclame od altre le quali dessero speranza di procurare un maggiore e proficuo svolgimento d’affari.
Del resto io non ho che a lodarmi del zelo e delle cure colle quali Ella attende alla filiale a Lei affidata: ho piena fiducia che non mancherà di operare similmente per l’avvenire e glie ne do prova coll’avvertirla che col Gennaio 1895 le accordo sullo stipendio mensile un aumento di Lire sterline due, e cioè St £.e24 annuali, ch’Ella preleverà nel modo che stimerà opportuno. Desidero che la crescente prosperità di codesta filiale mi permetta anche in avvenire di sempre meglio compensare i di Lei servigi.

Enclosed please find the 1893-94 financial statement for this affiliate. Clearly this result is more comforting than the previous one, but nevertheless it is not what I and most certainly you would prefer. Indeed, what little profit can be claimed is such that any expense even slightly out of the ordinary would reduce it to zero, or even into deficit. I know very well that an affiliate in London needs a greater material stimulus of money; but this can be done only when the store is more profitable, and then, with a congruent remuneration of capital, the larger profit could be destined for publicity costs or the like, whatever seems most likely to stimulate the growth of more and increasingly lucrative business.
For the rest I have nothing but praise for your diligent care in attending to the affiliate entrusted to you, and I am fully confident that you will continue to perform in this same manner in the future. As proof thereof, I wish to inform you that from January 1895 I am increasing your monthly stipend by two pounds sterling, therefore 24 pounds sterling per year, which is yours to withdraw in the manner you find most opportune. It is my hope that the growing prosperity of this affiliate will allow me to augment the compensation for your services in like manner.
