[resto illeggibile, a parte]

ti obbligherà a fermarti ancora un poco

abbiate riguardo

affettuosi abbracci da noi tutti

Tuo aff.mo Papà

CLET002068

Milan, 5 Nov. 1896

Dearest Tito

Paris

In response to your letter of the 2nd of this month, I see what you write about your trip to Brussels. You had previously mentioned this matter, which is undeniably quite important, albeit still in an early phase of gestation. However, I must express my extreme surprise for the fact that I was not given any forewarning of the visit of Otlet to our workshops: even if I had not been available, it was the duty of those employees to inform me immediately. The General Manager must be informed without fail of everything, since he alone is ultimately accountable! You will thus do well to give to whoever is responsible for this omission a severe dressing down.

I foresaw the enormous difficulties you would encounter with the Paris affiliate: difficulties which, I dare say, seem insurmountable to me!... Nonetheless, let’s not be discouraged. I also foresaw that you would have immediately relieved Lecoq of his duties, but at the same time, I foresee that none of the candidates I’ve been informed of thus far will be acceptable.

No. 1 – Gromier. He strikes me as one of those ineffectual time-wasters whom I would not entrust with even 5 francs! This sort of person who has done a little bit of everything in his career is a risk, since he cannot adapt well into a fixed, quiet, honest job. That Salomon fellow, the ex-president of the French Chamber of Commerce, is a jackass, a Salamon [i.e. “salami”, a simpleton]!... But if you think it’s useful I can contact him, bearing in mind that the information he provides is only useful up to a point. Better still to seek information from Ambassador Tornielli, but even he recommends a certain Magagna, who indeed seems to be a magagna [problem]: I’ve known quite a few members of the Italian Chamber of Commerce like that, worthless blowhards who fish in troubled waters!! Even No. 2 I find unconvincing.

No. 2 – Renaud. I know him! Steer clear of failed musicians (even though he may be talented), he will never be an able administrator nor a man who will take a fixed job seriously. He will be another Rabourdin, [???] albeit with the advantage [???].

In any case send me the address of each of them and I’ll see to obtaining information about them. And yet, alas, I fear there is nothing to be done! [With regard to the] letter of a certain Fouquet, which has shown up various times, I ‘ve no idea who he is or what he’s worth, but it will be useful that you get information about him [as well?].

I fear it may be impossible to find a man with the qualities we require and perhaps, to my extreme disappointment, we will be forced to shut down this affiliate. That would be a painful move, because it will represent a real failure and produce negative repercussions; painful also because the sales of sheet music aren’t bad and seem to be on the upswing, which shows that the business there, if it were in the hands of a capable person, would certainly develop in a way that would pay off!

I remain of the opinion that in Paris, and for the Parisian market, we need a Frenchman at the helm of the affiliate. Let’s keep looking among the employees at other shops to try to find a good premier commis [head-of-office], who knows how to keep pushing sales, make good connections, increase the clientele. Let’s not go searching, for the moment, for someone with the so-called “soul” of an entrepreneur: that will come later, and we can meantime make up for that with frequent visits to this affiliate. If we organize the day-to-day running of this affiliate with rigor and clarity things should go better of their own. How can we think now about a true manager?... extremely difficult to find, and having found him”, he quite rightly will have to be paid a lot… whereas, witness the enormity of the losses to which this branch has sunk, even though its rental costs are not high. Is it just not possible to find, from among the many publisher’s shops of Paris, a true head-of-office capable of simply running the affiliate without, for the time being, trying to overreach in our aspirations?

It seems to me that this is the only possible course of action, in light of current circumstances. I await further information from you.

It is quite necessary that the office connected to the shop be decently furnished, so by all means proceed; I trust you will do things with economy.

Manolo is in military uniform, but not completely: he won’t have a weapon for another 8 or 10 days, that is, until after he has received training in handling arms [???] from 5 to 7:30, hence he can take his meal here at home [???] he is exhausted, because they make them work a lot, [and these days?] the volunteer soldiers no longer have those facilitations [they once did?].

Mother has returned to Milan, so we’re in our winter [quarters?] but not everyone is here yet. [You are still missing?]: we hope to see you soon

[the rest is illegible, in another part]

it will oblige you to remain a bit longer

Take good care

Affectionate embraces from all of us

Affectionately yours, Father
