Ricevo la sua d’jeri: e non le taccio ch’Ella bene si appone dubitando scossa la fiducia mia verso di Lei - e ciò non soltanto da ora, ma da qualche tempo. Mentre riconosco in lei alcune ottime qualità (senza le quali, del resto, non l’avrei mantenuto nel posto fin qui occupato, il che è cosa naturalissima), vedo in pari tempo con mio dispiacere ch’Ella non ha un giusto concetto di quella perfetta morale, che anche all’infuori dei propri incombenti d’ufficio, forma il buono ed onesto impiegato. Ella si lamenta di male lingue che lo calunniano….. eppure la maggior parte degli appunti che le sono mossi, quantunque un po’ ingranditi come sempre accade, sono veri!... e benché da Lei in parte abilmente giustificati, pure assolutamente negare non li poté!! - Così la cambiale, se ora è miracolosamente smarrita, pure ha esistito! - così alcuni debiti plateali, che io non posso ammettere data la di lei posizione di famiglia e d’onorario. Guardi intorno a sé, s’informi delle paghe concesse in altre aziende...- ma che dico….. pensi ai mensili degli ufficiali dell’esercito, quale decoro debbono mantenere…. insomma faccia i debiti confronti, e le conclusioni sono facili a farsi! - Nasce poi l’idea d’un matrimonio: idea lodevole nel caso che la persona scelta abbia, come credo, le qualità volute: dunque, idea ottima… ma come effettuarla?... con un prestito vistoso alla Cassa della ditta!.. Dov’è il buon senso?... è questa una prova di serietà di propositi?... al contrario - è l’andare incontro agli impegni certi dell’avvenire, mettendo intanto un piede nell’abisso del debito, per arrivare al 0x0=0!... ossia alla miseria ed alle relative conseguenze! Veda…. anch’io ho una buona idea: dopo tanti anni di lavoro, mi piacerebbe farmi tirare un po’ in vettura, avere una buona pariglia ecc.! solamente, mancando il cumquibus, potrei domandare a’ miei soci, 20, o 25 mila lire…. in prestito! - Oh!... riceverei una bella risposta.
Insomma, tutto sommato, ripeto che v’è in lei un punto squilibrato! - se ciò che accade ora avrà virtù di ristabilire l’equilibrio, tanto meglio per Lei! e le assicuro che ciò mi farà vivissimo piacere.

I am in receipt of your letter of yesterday and I won’t hide the fact that I think you do well to assume that my faith in you is shaken, and not just recently, but for some time now. While I recognize some good qualities in you (without which, of course, I would not have kept you on in the position you occupy), at the same time I notice, with displeasure, that you do not have a clear idea of that moral rectitude which is — even above and beyond your assigned duties — the foundation of every good and honest employee. You complain about gossips who slander you… and yet the majority of observations made in your regard (albeit somewhat exaggerated, as always happens), are nonetheless true!... and even though you are always clever in finding a justification for them, you cannot deny them outright!! And so that promissory note, which has miraculously disappeared, did nonetheless at one point exist! The same goes for some blatant debts, which I cannot accept in light of your station and your pay level. Look around you, obtain information about salaries at other companies, indeed, think of the monthly pay of military officers, and of their standard-of-living levels… in short, make the necessary comparison and it is easy to draw conclusions! Now comes the idea of a marriage — a laudable idea if the chosen spouse has the qualities desired, as I believe she must, and thus, a fine idea. But... how to pay for it? Why, with an exorbitant loan from the coffers of the Company!... where is the good sense in this?... Is this an indication of serious intentions?... on the contrary, it is the way to go toward inevitable future financial obligations while planting one foot in the abyss of debt, to reach the result of 0x0=0!... which is to say, of inescapable indigence and all its related consequences! You see, even I have an idea that pleases me: after all these years of work, I’d like to travel about in a private coach drawn by a pair of fine horses, etc.! But since I haven’t got the cumquibus [cash] for it, I could ask my shareholders for 20 or 25 thousand lire… on loan! Oh!... I would receive fine response to that.
In short, summing up, I repeat that there seems to be something a bit unbalanced about you! If what happens from here on serves to reestablish your sense of equilibrium, so much the better for you! And I assure you that this would give me enormous satisfaction.
