Se non fosse la buona opinione che ho di Lei, non avrei risposto alla sua d’jeri – e sarebbe stato male, perché ciò avrebbe voluto dire una risoluzione definitiva da parte mia.
Ma ho pensato che probabilmente non ha calcolato la giusta portata delle sue osservazioni, in quanto che lo scrivere che presso la mia amministrazione: avrebbe più probabilità di riuscita chi in molti anni ha fatto poco, anziché chi in poco ha fatto molto.
Lasciamo andare… perché chi in molti anni fa poco, trova anche la porta aperta ed è pregato di andarsene: ma la di Lei osservazione è una patente di cretini data al gerente ed a’ suoi Consiglieri di vigilanza. E non v’ha dubbio che ciò non è stato nella di Lei intenzione, altrimenti quale provvedimento dovrei prendere?
Io valuto benissimo i di Lei meriti, il di lei zelo e tutte le altre qualità che può giustamente vantare: ma le devo anche dire che sulla piazza commerciale di Milano una mensilità come la Sua non è poi tanto meschina da giudicarla affatto impari al compenso meritato – e le dirò altresì che li stessi miei figliuoli hanno dovuto sospirare alquanto ed anche dovranno sospirare prima di raggiungere la cifra mensile ch’Ella ha attualmente.
Io credo non giudicarmi male affermando che, quantunque di temperamento nervoso, sono un uomo fra i più equi nel giudicare altrui.
Ma la forma data alla di Lei replica non è tale da far pendere la bilancia dalla parte favorevole.

Were it not for the good opinion I have of you I would not have responded to your letter of yesterday – and that would have been bad since it would have signaled a definitive decision on my part.
But I thought you probably did not consider the true weight of your observations when you wrote that in my administration “He who has done little over many years has a better chance of advancement than he who has accomplished much in a few years”.
Let’s ignore that... because he who has done little over the course of many years will always find the door open and is encouraged to leave. But your observation brands the general manager and his Board of Oversight as a pack of imbeciles. No doubt that was not your intention, otherwise what measures should I take?
I have a very high regard for your merits, your zeal, and all the other qualities you can rightly claim. But I must also observe that in the commercial circles of Milan a monthly stipend like yours is not so paltry as to be judged unequal to the compensation you deserve – and I will add that my own sons have had to strive mightily and will continue to do so before they reach the level of your current monthly stipend.
I think it is fair for me to claim that, even though I may have a nervous disposition, I am among the most equitable of men when it comes to judging others.
But the way you formulated your reply does not tilt the balance in favor of the positive side.
