My dear friend,

   As always, you are completely right to be annoyed with me for my late response to your letters; and you would be even more justified were I nothing but a miserable little publisher derelict in his duties as a friend and a businessman — but this time I would beg some additional bit of forgiveness, because beyond my numerous affairs I found myself fighting a duel!! Sunday 27 July I had to draw my sword against one of my friends, who wounded me slightly in the neck; it all ended well, and now that I am completely healed I can bring you my news and tell you what I think about the Rostand proposal.

   I knew I was not the only one to have considered acquiring some of the works of the great man, and I also knew that he wanted to make a deal for all of it in one block. I was also aware that he had given an option to Mr Astruc and that he had offers from Mr Heugel (with whom I believe you are great friends?). But I think Astruc does not have sufficient funds to quench the thirst of your illustrious dramatist, and on the other side Heugel is too shrewd a businessman to risk a fortune on the complete works of Edmond Rostand, only to end up with three lyric operas at best (La Princesse lointaine - Cyrano de Bergerac - Les Romanesques (?)).

   I might add that for my part, while I respect Mr Rostand as a belletrist, I find him to be rather distasteful when he attempts to sell all of his work together to the highest bidder without any concern for the choice of composer or publisher — that is, without a hint of concern for the success of the operas eventually based on his works, thereby demonstrating that he has but one goal: to make a great deal of money in one fell stroke and then hide behind the publisher, because experience has taught me that the best subject in the world is doomed to failure as an opera if the composer is not chosen with care.

   It is you who must sound out Rostand to learn what price and what conditions he demands to conclude this affair with my Company; if the global figure he asks is not too frightful I will convince my shareholders to go along with it — otherwise I will not pursue it further, since the benefits would accrue to one side alone and I would never allow myself to be so deceived.

   Be it understood that I will maintain complete secrecy regarding your intervention in this affair: you know me entirely too well to doubt my word.

   Write to me as soon as you have news — and however it should be, my heartfelt thanks for this latest proof of your friendship.

Cara amica,

        Come sempre lei ha tutte le ragioni di essere irritata con me per il mio ritardo nel rispondere alle sue lettere; e ne avrebbe ancora di più se io non fossi che un povero piccolo editore che manca ai suoi doveri d'amico e d'uomo di affari – ma questa volta sono un pochino più scusabile perché alle mie numerose occupazioni ho voluto aggiungere un duello!! Domenica 27 luglio ho dovuto sguainare la spada contro uno dei miei amici che mi ha leggermente ferito al collo; tutto è finito bene e adesso che sono completamente guarito posso darle mie notizie e dirle quello che penso della proposta Rostand.

Sapevo di non essere il solo ad aver messo gli occhi su  qualcuna delle opere del grand'uomo e sapevo pure  che lui desidera fare un affare in blocco. So inoltre che ha dato un'opzione a Mr. Astruc e che ha avuto delle offerte da parte di Mr. Heugel (mi sembra che lei sia una sua grande amica?). Ma credo che Astruc non abbia il denaro sufficiente a spegnere la sete del vostro illustre drammaturgo e d'altra parte Heugel è troppo uomo d'affari per rischiare una fortuna su tutta l'opera di Edmond Rostand per poi trarne tutt'al più tre opere liriche (La Principessa lontana – Cyrano di Bergerac – Les Romanesques (?)).

Aggiungo per parte mia che, pur stimando M. Rostand come uomo di lettere, lo trovo abbastanza disgustoso quando pretende di vendere in blocco tutta la sua opera a chi offre di più senza preoccuparsi della scelta del compositore e dell'editore – senza cioè preoccuparsi per nulla dell'avvenire delle opere liriche che sarà possibile   trarre dalle sue opere e mostrando così che non desidera che una cosa: guadagnare molti soldi in un colpo solo e nascondersi dietro l'editore, perché la mia esperienza mi insegna che il miglior soggetto del mondo diventa un fiasco, come opera lirica, se il compositore non è scelto per bene.

Spetta a lei sondare Rostand per capire a che prezzo e a quali condizioni vorrebbe concludere questo affare con la mia Ditta; se la cifra globale che chiederà non è troppo preoccupante la farò digerire ai miei soci – in caso contrario non ne farò nulla poiché tutti i vantaggi sarebbero da un lato solo e io non mi presterei mai a farmi abbindolare.   

Ben inteso manterrò il segreto più totale sul suo intervento in questo affare; lei mi conosce troppo bene per dubitarne.

Mi scriva appena avrà notizie da comunicarmi – in ogni modo grazie di cuore per la sua nuova prova di amicizia.
