mi pare assai difficile che vostro cognato possa trovare – in questi momenti veramente terribili di crisi teatrale – un impiego in una orchestra: pensate che, oltre a parecchi teatri nostrani chiusi, moltissimi dell’estero (Americhe, Russia, Romania, ecc.), dove di solito si facevano stagioni italiane, non si sono aperti quest’anno, riversando in patria una quantità insolita di disoccupati!! I teatri aperti hanno già iniziato da tempo le loro stagioni e quindi non abbisognano di personale: la stagione di primavera si annuncia assai male, perché tutti temono la guerra – ed ora si aggiungono i danni del terremoto. Per quei pochi teatri che si apriranno ci sarà la ressa dei rimasti a spasso per ottenere una scrittura – e chissà quanti rimarranno ancora disoccupati. Questo il quadro reale del come stanno le cose nel mondo lirico.
Mi pare dunque che vostro cognato debba, prima di tutto, risparmiare la spesa di un inutile viaggio a

Dear Friend,
I think it would be extremely difficult for your brother-in-law — in this truly terrible period of theatrical crisis — to find an orchestra position: consider that, in addition to our own numerous shuttered theatres, a great many of those abroad (the Americas, Russia, Romania, etc.) that had regularly programmed seasons of Italian music did not open this year, which forced an unusual number of unemployed musicians to return home!! Those theatres that remained open already have their seasons well underway and therefore need no additional personnel; the spring season looks extremely bleak because everyone fears we will join the war — and now we face additional problems caused by the damage from the earthquake. What few theatres are still planning to open will be assailed by jobless applicants seeking a position — and who knows how many will remain jobless nonetheless. This is a realistic picture of the state of things in the world of opera.
It seems to me therefore that your brother-in-law should first of all spare himself the expense of a useless trip to Milan; tell him to send me — by registered post — his documents and I'll see if I can help him in some way. More than that I can neither promise nor do — and I say this with a heavy heart, because I would have wanted to give you a different response.
