L’entrata in campagna dell’Italia ha dato un altro colpo, ed il più fiero, alla nostra industria editoriale; questo ti dico non per levare querimonie, ché troppo bene tu conosci i miei sentimenti per non sapere con quanta gioia e fierezza ho accolto le supreme decisioni che hanno spinto la nostra patria sulla via della vittoria, ma per palesarti quanto avrei in animo di fare per cercare di porre un riparo alle condizioni tristissime in cui si svolge ora e chissà per quant’altro tempo la nostra industria.
Dunque avrei deciso di trasformare una parte della nostra officina a fabbricare granate (non shrapnel) da 75 – l’impianto del macchinario occorrente sarebbe pronto per la fine del prossimo ottobre, ove una decisione si potesse pigliare per la fine di questo mese. L’impianto da me studiato potrebbe produrre 10.000 granate al mese – ma sarei anche disposto a portarlo alla potenzialità di 20.000 granate al mese quando ciò occorresse.
Io mi deciderei a fare l’uno o l’altro impianto qual’ora il Ministero della Guerra mi affidasse una ordinazione di 120.000 o di 240.000 granate da consegnarsi in un anno a partire dal mese di novembre 1915 – e cioè il contratto dovrebbe valere dal 1 novembre 1915 al 31 ottobre 1916.
So che il Ministero della Guerra ha fissato dei prezzi unitari per la fabbricazione dei proiettili – prezzi che sono abbastanza remunerativi – ma per ora non mi occorre entrare in questo particolare.
Io ti pregherei soltanto di farmi sapere se al ministero della Guerra la mia proposta sarebbe bene accetta – in tal caso io verrei a

My dear Nicola,
Italy's entry into the military campaign has struck yet another blow, and the most violent one, to our publishing industry; I say this to you not to complain, since you understand my sentiments too well not to know what pride and joy I felt in learning of the supreme decisions that have set our country on the path to victory, but to propose what I think might serve as refuge from the most lamentable conditions in which our industry finds itself now and who knows for how much longer still.
To wit, I have resolved to transform a part of our factory for the production of 75 [mm] cannon shells (not shrapnel) — the necessary machinery would be ready by the end of this coming October, should a decision be made by the end of this month. The system I have devised could produce 10,000 shells per month — but I would also be disposed to increase its capacity to 20,000 shells per month if needed.
I would construct one or the other system subject to whether the Ministry of War were to give me an order of 120,000 or 240,000 shells to consign over one year beginning from November 1915 — that is to say, the contract would be valid for the period from 1 November 1915 to 31 October 1916.
I know that the Ministry of War has established unit prices for the manufacture of projectiles — prices that are reasonably remunerative — but for now I need not pursue that particular aspect further.
I would only ask you to let me know if the Ministry of War would be favorably inclined toward my proposal — in which case I would come to Rome and could discuss the complete details of my proposal with the office in charge of munitions for the Royal Army.
Kindly respond without delay, and meanwhile accept my thanks for your courteous intercession.
