Dear Counselor,
Thank you for your best wishes for my mother's health in your welcome letter of the 26th; her condition has improved slightly but not enough to dispel our many concerns.
I thought it was useless to meet with Hon. De Capitani, at least for the time being; instead, I went to speak with Sen. Salmoiraghi, who, contrary to the impression Dr. De Gravenhoff had, seems quite quite receptive to our initiative — only that he would prefer to invite some Milanese industrialists and businessmen to the Chamber of Commerce so that they might join our organization, and to do this I waited for Dr. De Gravenhoff to return to Milan. Since Sen. Salmoiraghi also suggested inviting Silva, who is a prominent broker of English coal, I immediately countered that he is not the kind of individual that we would like to have, at least for now, among our supporters; such industrialists and businessmen can be asked later if need be. My consequent concern is that if Dr. De Gravenhoff comes to Milan he should inform me personally before meeting with Sen. Salmoiraghi, so that we can reach a precise mutual agreement regarding exactly whom we want to join this promotional organization. In any event, I have the impression that Sen. Salmoiraghi will subscribe, even independently, to our list.
I am very pleased to learn that Hon. Bettolo has accepted, just as I hope you will also be successful in obtaining the support of Senators Scaramella and Di Sirignano and of Frisoni. It seems that with them we are very close to the requisite number of ten we seek, and that perhaps the names offered by Sen. Salmoiraghi will be superfluous, especially if Sig. De Gravenhoff can go to Turin to solicit the support of Billia.
Please advise Dr. De Gravenhoff that I thought it was a good idea to typeset and print his report on the Russian coal mines together with the relative map of their locations; the expense will not be excessive, and it will further raise the profile of our initiative; understood, of course, that this is because the report is signed by Dimitri de Gravenhoff.
I am absolutely convinced that it is useless to form a Joint-Stock/Public Limited Company to reach our objective; if you can put together an organizational charter that manages to avoid the pitfalls of our legislative morass, you will have found a way to square the circle, which is what I truly hope you are able to do.
With warmest greetings, I remain
Yours most sincerely
