I have received your letter of the 5th of this month. The justifications that you now offer for your conduct up until this time are nothing more than accusations of incompetence and bad faith launched against a person who passed away: I’ll let you come to your own conclusions whether I should place any stock in them. Nonetheless, facts are facts, and you cannot find a convenient justification for these: recently – therefore after the direction of this shop had passed ad interim to you – I received a complaint from a client who, after having waited fifteen days for some music ordered from our shop in Rome, was told that due to the illness of the scribe (!) the order was never even placed (!!). Not to mention the fact, which I only now learned about, that for the last 10 years no paperwork for the loading and unloading of merchandise have been prepared! Well then, on what basis have the reports for authors’ earnings been drafted? And notice that preparing the loading-and-unloading paperwork was your responsibility!!! And what can we say about your continual absences from the shop?!! And what should I think of an employee to whom I send precise, categorical instructions for what he must do to place the shop administration in order before this coming 20 April, to which I have not received a single word in response!!!
The petty cash ledger should have been consigned to me several days ago, and you should have begun the work of inventory. Was the shop messenger informed that he would be laid off at the end of next month?
You can see, therefore, that your declaration that you have always worked with enthusiasm in the best interests of the Company is no longer sufficient for me to believe that you want to, and can, conscientiously carry out the duties entrusted to you, as well as those which might be assigned to you in the future by Sig. Fornaciari.
It is thus with deep displeasure that I must inform you of my decision that, after the end of the current month, you will no longer be part of my organization. I invite you therefore to formally consign the cash box and the administrative ledgers of this shop directly to Sig. Luigi Fornaciari.
I have arranged that at the end of the month, once we have verified the regularity of the consignments directly to the new Director, you will be given four months’ salary.
