My dear friend,

   I received your letter of the 3rd of this month — in effect, you had spoken to me about Mr. Fonson at Villa d'Este, but you never introduced him to me. I have immediately begun working with Broglio to organize the tour of conferences. Here is what we have put together as a general plan, which may involve an eventual change only to some detail or other.

   Mr. Fonson will present his conferences in Turin, Milan, Brescia, Verona, Udine, Venice, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Genoa — we would like to have these conferences sponsored by the civil defense Committee of each city — after expenses, the proceeds would be split into 50% for the Committees and 50% for Mr. Fonson. We would see that Mr. Ullmann of Milan is available to assist Mr. Fonson in organizing all of the details of the tour.

   You had written to me regarding the "Secolo" and Senator Albertini of the "Corriere" — in effect, we need the support of these two great newspapers to successfully realize the encounters with the Committees of the various cities. But to date I have been unable to bring Pontremoli and Albertini together —although I will see them both tonight at the banquet we are giving for Hanotaux, and since they are already familiar with this project I will easily obtain their agreement —and then I will be able to write you with greater precision.

   Mr. Aldo Weill-Schott tells me that he is waiting for a receipt from you for the check of 500 francs he sent you some time ago— but that above all he is waiting for the Hirtz compass, which should have been shipped more than a month ago.

   Here are the answers of interest for your group:

   1. = The headquarters are in Milan — with affiliates in Rome, Genoa, Naples, Palermo, Turin, Florence, Bologna, Venice — we are not particularly committed to keeping them all, but my friend has observed that in Italy it is all but essential to have affiliates in the most important centers, given that things tend to be less centralized here than they are in France.

   In Milan there is also a Laboratory available if desired.

   My friend owns various buildings in Milan (including the Laboratory), Florence, Rome, and Naples — and he is willing to lease them with a long-term contract.

   The rent of the other affiliates is as follows:

   Genoa £. 60,000 - Bologna £. 23,000 - Palermo £. 55,000 - Turin £. 51,000 - Venice £. 18,700.

   The retail value of the inventory on hand is around six million lire. We want to form an Italian Association and are prepared to make an initial investment once we know how the Association will be structured, and especially who will be at the head of this new organization.

   These then are all of the details I could put together: it seems to me that, if you would come to Milan with some of your friends who are interested in this affair, and especially some people with the expertise to make a first-hand evaluation of its importance, we can bring things to a rapid conclusion — quod est in votis [so it is to be hoped].

   I understand that your attention is completely focused on Verdun right now — but this torment cannot last forever, and since we are sure the victory will go to your admirable soldiers, it is up to you to determine when it would be most opportune to initiate these business discussions with your friends.

   What have you decided for our meeting in Paris? Do let me know quickly, so that I can make the arrangements for our trip in time.

Caro amico,

Ho ricevuto la sua lettera del 3 c/  – in effetti lei mi aveva parlato di M. Fonson a Villa d'Este, ma non me l'ha mai presentato. Mi sono occupato subito con Broglio della tournée di conferenze. Ecco quanto abbiamo concordato in linea di massima, salvo cambiare qualche dettaglio.

M. Fonson terrà le sue conferenze a Torino, Milano, Brescia, Verona, Udine, Venezia, Bologna, Firenze, Roma, Genova – vorremmo mettere tali conferenze sotto il patronato del Comitato di preparazione civile di ogni città – i proventi, una volta pagate le spese, andrebbero per il 50% ai Comitati e per il 50% a M. Fonson. Metteremmo il Sig. Ullmann di Milano a disposizione del conferenziere per organizzare tutti i dettagli della tournée.       

Lei mi aveva scritto a proposito del “Secolo” e del senatore Albertini del “Corriere” – in effetti per portare a buon fine i colloqui con i Comitati delle diverse città è necessario avere l'appoggio di questi due grandi giornali. Ma fino ad oggi non ero riuscito a mettere insieme Pontremoli con Albertini – ma stasera li vedrò entrambi al banchettto che daremo a Hanotaux, e poiché sanno già di che cosa si tratta li metterò facilmente d'accordo – e allora potrò scriverle in maniera più precisa.

Il Sig. Aldo Weill–Schott mi dice che aspetta da lei la ricevuta di un assegno da 500 franchi che le ha inviato da un po' di tempo – ma soprattutto che aspetta l'invio del compasso di Hirtz che avrebbe dovuto essere fatto più di un mese fa.

Ecco le risposte che interessano il suo gruppo:

1° = La Sede principale è a Milano – le succursali sono a Roma, Genova, Napoli, Palermo, Torino, Firenze, Bologna, Venezia – non ci teniamo particolarmente a conservarle tutte, ma il mio amico mi fa osservare che in Italia è pressoché indispensabile avere delle succursali nei centri più importanti non essendoci lo stesso spirito di centralizzazione della Francia.

A Milano c'è anche un Laboratorio che si può prendere o lasciare.

Il mio amico è proprietario degli immobili di Milano (Laboratorio incluso), Firenze, Roma e Napoli – ed è disponibile ad affittarli con un contratto di lunga durata.

L'affitto delle altre succursali è il seguente:

Lo stock di merci, al prezzo di vendita, è di sei milioni di lire circa. Desideriamo costituire una Società italiana e siamo disposti a entrarci con una quota, una volta che sapremo qual è la forma che si vuole dare alla Società e soprattutto quando sapremo chi sarà alla testa della nuova organizzazione.

Ecco qui tutti i dettagli che ho potuto avere: ho l'impressione che se lei verrà a Milano con qualcuno dei suoi amici che si interessano a quest'affare, e soprattutto con gente del mestiere che potrà valutare da vicino la sua importanza, arriveremo in fretta a una conclusione – quod est in votis.   

Capisco che in questo momento la sua attenzione è tutta per Verdun – ma questa tormenta non potrà durare in eterno e siccome siamo sicuri che finirà per dare la vittoria ai vostri ammirevoli soldati sceglierà lei il momento opportuno per parlare di affari ai suoi amici.

Cosa ha deciso per il nostro incontro a Parigi? me lo faccia sapere rapidamente per preparare a tempo debito il nostro viaggio.
