My dear Maxwell,
Herewith my immediate response to your letter of this 31 August past.
I completely approve of your manner of dealing with Mr. Campanini and Chicago Co.: I have not seen Campanini, but if he should ever complain about you in any way, rest assured that I will not fail to inform him that your conduct is very correct and in any event very "business like" [thus in original].
I just received the notorious project for our New York Affiliate, a project which is absolutely unacceptable and which I have refused with a simple telegram. The Company that wanted to arrange this affair is Jos. W. Stern & Co., with whom I'm sure you must be familiar, and about whom I would appreciate knowing more as a matter of sheer curiosity.
Since the music business is faring quite poorly here and it is necessary to find some other means of survival, I have recently set up on my own an import-export agency for dealing primarily between North America and my country; this by way of explaining the lengthy telegram I sent you today regarding the special gasoline for aviation and the phenylic acid. As the legal representative of this personal business, I have secured the services of a highly respectable Briton and member of the English Chamber of Commerce of Milan who has lived here for fifteen years and sought employment following the collapse of his own business affairs: his name is Mr. Stanley F. Meadows, with whom you may have the occasion to correspond if we should ever need information from you regarding my business dealings in America. I sincerely hope you will be willing to assist me in this new adventure, for which your business savvy and commercial activity may be quite valuable; and since I want our collaboration to be not just friendly [but also professional], please be sure to bill me personally for all costs of correspondence or any other expense you should incur — in addition to which I will give you 10% of my net profits from any business passing through your hands.
All relative correspondence should be addressed to Tito Ricordi, 2 Via Berchet, Milan — for telegrams: Tito Ricordi, Milan.
I have much good news regarding my family, except for my mother, who has been suffering greatly from rather too frequent episodes of bronchitis for some time. Manolo is still serving with automotive transport division in the Red Cross of Milan and is about to become part of the hospital that the cities of France will establish in a part of our workshops — Gigino has left with his cavalry regiment and is currently in the area of Spilimbergo; if you would like to write to him, here is his address: Second Lieutenant Luigi Ricordi, 3° Savoia Cavalleria, Zona di Guerra — one of my sister's two eldest sons, Carlo, has just become a second lieutenant in the 27th artillery division and for the moment is still in Milan, while the other, Tomaso, is at the Tonale Pass, where he has already been twice in combat and will soon become a second lieutenant in the 5th regiment of the Alpini.
Awaiting the pleasure of your response, I remain
yours warmly
Tito Ricordi

CLET002196
Milano 22 settembre 1915
Caro Maxwell,
Tito Ricordi
