Milan 25 September 1915

Dear Monsieur Luchaire,

I have been actively involved with the installation of our hospital; this morning I chose the most suitable beds and side tables.

   Regarding the surgical instruments and installation of the X-ray machine, my brother suggests you acquire them in Paris, deducting what you spend there directly from the sum of 40,000 francs.

   I would need no more than a few days to provide you with the list (in Italian) of all the instruments needed for the operating room.

   For the X-ray machine, my brother asks that you request an estimate from the Etablissements Gaiffe (a subsidary of Gallot & C.), 40 Rue St. André des Arts. Please tell them that it is for hospital purposes; the electric current is 40 volts — three-phase power — 42 Hz. You should also add a complete kit with a Hirtz compass, and ask if they can supply the electrical transformer themselves.

   You should also meet with Sig. Tittoni so that he might obtain, as he has done on other similar occasions, free transport from Paris to Milan for everything you will purchase in Paris for the new hospital of the Italian Red Cross which is about to open, and a dispensation from the Italian Government for any customs that would be charged for these items.

   I have seen Sig. Rava recently, to whom I explained (with considerable difficulty) my ideas regarding the financial operation of the Italy-France Cooperative Committee and the International Committee. Sig. Luzzatti, through Sig. Rava, has already made amends for his faux pas, offering me the position of treasurer of the International Committee together with Sig. Cerf.

   I attempted to make Sig. Rava understand the necessity of setting up a small economical office in Milan; he asked me to provide him with a report to submit to Sig. Luzzatti — we must wait for his approval, or eventually we will do without.

   As for the magazine, I have been totally unable to corner any of my friends who would be concerned with its operation; but worry not, I will certainly do so before the end of the month.

Caro Monsieur Luchaire,

Mi sto occupando attivamente del nostro ospedale; stamattina ho scelto i letti e i comodini che dovrebbero andare bene.

Quanto agli strumenti chirurgici e all’installazione della radioscopia mio fratello suggerisce di procurarseli a Parigi defalcando dalla somma di 40.000 franchi quello che lei avrà speso direttamente.  

Fra qualche giorno potrei farle avere la lista (in italiano) di tutti gli strumenti che serviranno per la sala operatoria.

Per la radioscopia mio fratello la prega di farsi fare un preventivo dagli Etablissements Gaiffe (Gallot & C. succ.) 40 Rue St.André des Arts. Bisogna dirgli che si tratta di un’installazione per un ospedale; la corrente elettrica è a 40 volts – trifase – 42 periodi. Bisognerà far aggiungere un astuccio completo con compasso di Hirtz. Voglia anche chiedere se la stessa Ditta si occupa di fornire il trasformatore di corrente.

Bisognerebbe anche che lei vedesse il Sig.Tittoni perché ottenga, come ha già fatto in occasioni simili, il trasporto gratuito da Parigi a Milano di tutto quello che lei comprerà a Parigi per il nuovo ospedale della Croce Rossa Italiana che sta per fondare e ottenga anche che il Governo italiano non faccia pagare i diritti di dogana per tutti questi oggetti.

Ho visto in questi giorni il Sig. Ravà, al quale ho spiegato (con molte difficoltà) le mie idee sul funzionamento finanziario del Comitato Italia-Francia e del Comitato Internazionale. Il Sig. Luzzati, per mezzo del Sig. Ravà, ha già rimediato alla sua gaffe offrendomi l'incarico di tesoriere del Comitato Internazionale insieme al Sig. Cerf.

Ho cercato di spiegare al Sig. Ravà il bisogno di creare a Milano un piccolo ufficio studi economico; mi ha pregato di indirizzargli una memoria da sottoporre al Sig. Luzzati – aspetteremo la sua approvazione, ed eventualmente ne faremo a meno.  

Quanto alla rivista mi è stato impossibile mettere le mani su qualcuno degli amici che dovrebbero occuparsi del suo funzionamento, ma non si preoccupi, lo farò sicuramente prima della fine del mese.
