Illustre Maestro ,

Milan, 8 February 1889

Illustrious Maestro ,

These days I’ve had to deal with a world of bother and aggravation!!.... and consequent anger: little annoyances and frustrations, but when added together..... they make for quite a hefty sum! Lucky for me that in the midst of these clouds I received your welcome letters. Go ahead, Maestro, and say that they are long!... but they will never be long enough, so much do I enjoy them. Along with the little annoyances, we also have that enormous one in Oxilia ’s illness!.. Everyone had been rehearsing with such passion and devotion! and it would have made for a wonderful dress rehearsal!.. Now all that care, all that effort has become useless. The worst of it is that the situation is serious, that is to say, tonsillitis!.... Corti has been anything but idle, and already the day before yesterday he left for Turin to try to secure De Negri . He should have returned yesterday evening, but the fact that I have not yet seen him today leads me to believe that he was not successful, just as I had foreseen, since Otello is also programmed in Turin ! I will see Corti later and hear the latest news. Such a pity!... Pity!!.. Pity!!. If you could only see what beautiful sets they are, all four of them! The storm scene is marvelous, and the clear sky that follows is so well done that it seems absolutely real. I can imagine you saying: “Why did you not do all of these beautiful things when I was there?” Because we did not have the stage technician that we have this year: he comes from Trieste and has dedicated extensive study to the theatre of Vienna , and he excels not only as stage technician but also in the latest lighting techniques, thanks to which the scenes acquire 50% more. I am truly, truly sorry that you were not able to be present for at least one rehearsal, to tell me also if the musical interpretations you indicated were executed properly, as I hope. And now, when and how is Otello to be performed?... two more rehearsals are necessary.... and here the notorious race against time is upon us. It’s your decision, Maestro, and your presence would bring good luck, as it always does to the theatre, to the artists....  to everyone!! Laugh if you will!... but it is the truth.

This Sunday then I will publish the Giubileo article . But.... it will hardly make much difference, since I fear, illustrious Maestro, that it will not be possible to stop such a large movement!.... Well then, as you say, the publisher will also withhold the operas!.... but something else will be done instead! Here again, it would be comforting if you were present in person to advise me. I repeat: I will withhold the operas... but it will not be enough to impede this manifestation of national sentiment. Meanwhile I’ll play the bulldog: I’ll bark and bare my teeth; but when no one else is listening I will be here shouting at the top of my lungs: Hurrah for our beloved Verdi !! beginning from this very moment.

I called Campanari straightaway; he considers it a great honor to undertake the charge you have given him and will begin immediately, asking that I convey to you his thanks and respects.

As per the orders I have received, letter and bank draft are enclosed .

Please remember me to dear Signora Peppina . I wish the both of you the best of health, and with my most cordial greetings and everlasting gratitude, I remain

                                                                                                 Your most devoted

Giulio Ricordi

Corti was just here: he was able to engage De Negri but could not come to an agreement with Borioli ; he will attempt further negotiation. Oxilia has a throat abscess: it will be a matter of days, but the doctors unanimously agree that once it has burst his voice will not suffer any damage. Corti says that he has kept his promise to you that the staging of the opera would be splendid.
