Prima di tutto auguri perché le conseguenze della toma siano leggere e presto reparabili.
Quanto alla di lei offerta di un contratto per "Italia" con un benefico anticipo sono purtroppo e dolorosamente obbligato a rispondere con un rifiuto. Questa santa e benedetta guerra che porterà certamente dei frutti meravigliosi all'albero già rigoglioso della nostra Italia è un disastro incommensurabile per la nostra industria. Non entro in dettagli, ma le faccio soltanto osservare che le sorgenti di prosperità nostra sono quasi tutte inaridite, prima di tutte la succursale di Lipsia che era la più importante delle nostre filiali estere. E che cosa dire dei teatri? e dei lavori litografici alle Officine?
Mio caro Illica, se le mie macchine potessero lavorare del cotone, della lana o del ferro avrei i mezzi di dare dei benefici anticipi a molta gente – ma la carta imbrattata non ha corso, almeno per ora, e tutti i miei sforzi sono rivolti a provvedere del necessario più di duecento famiglie di impiegati e di operai, addetti alla nostra Ditta.
Auguro che i tempi fra non molto volgano migliori e allora sarò ben felice di potere dar corso alla sua richiesta.

First of all, I do hope that the consequences of the tumble you took are slight and soon overcome.
As for your offer of a contract for "Italia" contingent upon a healthy advance, I am unfortunately and painfully obliged to respond with a refusal. This blessed war, whose splendid fruits will certainly come to grace the boughs of Italy's long luxuriant tree, is nonetheless an utter disaster for our industry. Without going into detail, I need only note that the sources of our prosperity have nearly all run dry, above all the subsidiary branch in Leipzig, which was the most important of our foreign affiliates. And what can I say about the theatres? and about the lithographic work in our Plant?
My dear Illica, if my machines could work cotton, wool, or iron, I would have the wherewithal to give healthy advances to many people — but ink-stained paper has no market, at least for now, and my efforts are entirely dedicated to providing a means of survival for more than two hundred families of the employees in the offices and workshops of our Company.
Let us hope that things soon take a turn for the better, and then I will be more than happy to agree to your request.
