My dear friend,

   Given that you must certainly have maintained friendly relations with Morgan & Co. and their sphere of business associates, I have two very important and serious proposals for America that could be of interest to the Morgan Bank or another financial group you might know of. They regard two manufacturing licenses:

   1 = for a six-cylinder, 150 HP airplane engine designed by Isotta Fraschini, which has given us superb results and is certainly the best in-line aviation engine currently available;

   2 = for a tractor by X.Y. (I am not authorized to supply names), designed for heavy loads and adapted to any type of terrain and the most arduous ascents, which has allowed our military defense forces to transport the heaviest artillery anywhere, including locations where cannon are extremely difficult to position.

  Would you therefore be so kind as to ask any investors if these business proposals might be interesting in the United States? If so, you can tell them to write to me in Milan, via Berchet 2.

   I know you are absolutely horrified at the thought of dealing with business matters — but perhaps for an old friend you could make an exception!!

   I have suspended taking strychnine because I live alone in Milan — it was most helpful, and should I need it I will resume the cure — thanks for the good suggestion.

Caro amico,

        Tu devi aver certamente conservato delle relazioni di amicizia con la Ditta Morgan e il suo ambiente di affari – avrei due proposte molto importanti e serie per l'America se possono interessare la Banca Morgan o un altro gruppo di tua conoscenza. Si tratta di due licenze di fabbricazione:

1°= del motore da aviazione Isotta Fraschini a sei cilindri 150 HP che ha dato prove superbe da noi e che è sicuramente il migliore dei motori fissi da aviazione

2°= del rimorchiatore X.Y. (non posso darti i nomi) di carichi pesanti e adatto a qualunque terreno e alle salite più dure che ha permesso al nostro Stato-maggiore di portare ovunque i cannoni più pesanti e più difficili da piazzare.

Ti chiedo dunque di essere così gentile da voler chiedere a qualche finanziere se questi affari potrebbero interessare negli Stati Uniti e in caso di risposta positiva di dire loro di scrivermi a Milano, via Berchet 2.

So che hai l'orrore più assoluto delle questioni di affari – ma forse per un vecchio amico potresti fare un'eccezione!!

Ho smesso la cura della stricnina perché a Milano sono vedovo – andava molto bene e in caso di bisogno la riprenderò – grazie per il buon suggerimento.
