Dear Counselor,
I am sorry that the proposal I made to Signor Leonardi should be refused not only by him but also by Giacomo Puccini (sic) [(sic) in the original] — because I truly have no other solution for settling things between us.
And since you inform me in your letter of the 12th of this month that it is necessary in any case to find another means of resolving the issue, which is essential at this point, I can only tell you that I am always ready to take into consideration any equitable solution Sig. Leonardi proposes together with Maestro Puccini.
The question is not one that was raised by me, but I offered what I feel is the only possible solution as proof to my friend Puccini that I had done my utmost to resolve it; this solution is not acceptable to Leonardi, nor to Puccini. It seems to me that it's their turn now to have a go at this knot and unravel it a bit. I will always be pleased if we can reach an agreement that is mutually advantageous for both sides.
In cordial anticipation of your response, as ever I remain
yours warmly
