Dear Counselor,
I have received your letters of the 5th and 13th of this month.
I gave a careful reading to the draft for the charter of the Association, and in my modest opinion it seems to be just fine.
As for the potential members I contacted, I must tell you that I tried in vain to see Salmoiraghi again — it's better that we let him go his own way — and Hon. De Capitani wrote me a letter in which he expressed considerable enthusiasm about our initiative, but he declined to join for lack of sufficient financial resources (in fact De Capitani is not particularly wealthy) — nonetheless he promised to solicit the interest of his friend Zonda, whom I know and would gladly welcome among us.
Following up on a suggestion from De Gravenhoff, today I went to see Eng. Ettore Conti, a friend of De Jongh; I explained things to him and left him with De Gravenhoff's report and the draft of the constitutional charter, and he promised he would respond soon. As for Biglia, I received a telegram from him that he would come find me this week; have you seen him? I have not.
In any case, since I have to go to Rome for other Company affairs, I've decided to leave Monday evening because I think my presence in the capital can bring us closer to forming the Association, though not quickly enough to please De Gravenhoff, who seems unable to understand that in all kinds of business, and especially an affair like ours where [missing words: perhaps to the effect of "one needs "] a farsighted perspective of the situation, it is absolutely impossible to rush things and obtain a good result.
I'll be staying at the Hôtel Excelsior as usual; telephone me around 11, by which time I should have arrived — we could see each other right away and set up an appointment or two for the early afternoon, if you will not already have done so.
I also need to speak with you to know where things stand regarding the caoutchouc affair, since I have the impression it's liquifying and a decision should be reached as soon as possible; indeed, given that I'll be going to Paris in early May, I could look into the situation at Creusot and see if in the meantime everything outstanding has been clarified — and that means everything.
