Rispondo alla tua lettera del giorno 8 corrente.
Il ritardo a presentare l’annuale bilancio della nostra Azienda, pel quale la tua osservazione sarebbe più che giusta in tempi normali, trova – mi pare – la sua giustificazione appunto nelle condizioni anormali nelle quali si svolge oggigiorno la nostra industria, specialmente per quanto reflette le succursali dell’estero – di cui una, quella di Lipsia, è posta sotto sequestro da parecchi mesi.
A farlo apposta le diverse chiamate alle armi qui e altrove hanno fatto il vuoto nell’elemento amministrativo della nostra Azienda. A Milano siamo ridotti ai minimi termini – a Londra morì nel mese di luglio il ragioniere Mr Croff, né fu possibile sostituirlo, cosicchè a tutt’oggi, per quanto sollecitassi, non ho ancora ricevuto i conti di chiusura al 30 giugno us – a Parigi ci portarono via, mesi fa, l’ultimo impiegato maschio – escluso il direttore Mr de Morsier – cosicché il bilancio di quella succursale lo ricevemmo soltanto in questi giorni.
Il nostro vecchio Commasio, rimasto solo alle Officine con l’aiuto di una signorina apprendista, gode di una salute molto accagionevole ed è sovente ammalato – il bilancio delle Officine – ottimo – fu chiuso soltanto tre giorni fa.
Questo in breve e non in tutto per darti ragione del ritardo a compilare il nostro Bilancio generale.
Quanto alle risultanze sue esse sono buone, migliori negli effetti del reddito di quelle del Bilancio 1915-16. Ma d’altro canto avendo creduto prudente di ammassare più che potevo di carta, di altre materie prime e di combustibile a prezzi ….. di guerra, il dividendo, da distribuire ai Soci sarà ancora del 5%, come nell’Esercizio scorso – e tale dividendo, per esigenze di cassa, sarà pagabile non prima del 15 prossimo dicembre.
L’Assemblea dei Soci si terrà credo ai primi del prossimo mese e mi auguro che tu voglia intervenirvi per portare quei consigli e quei suggerimenti che – in questi momenti così difficili – saranno preziosi.

Dear Uncle Luigi,
In response to your letter of the 8th of this month:
The delay in presenting our Firm's annual financial statement, for which your observation would be more than reasonable in normal times, is justified — it seems to me — precisely by the abnormal conditions under which our industry currently operates, especially with regard to our foreign affiliates — of which one, in Leipzig, has been placed under sequester for several months.
As if by design, the various calls to arms here and elsewhere have all but emptied the administrative positions of our Firm. In Milan we are reduced to a minimum — in London the accountant Mr Croff died in July and it was not possible to replace him, such that to date, despite my repeated urging, I have not yet received the closing balance report for this past 30 June — in Paris our last male employee — except for the director, Mr de Morsier — was taken away months ago, which meant that we were left to wait for the balance from that affiliate until its arrival only quite recently.
Our old Commasio, the only one left in the Workshops with the assistance of a young female apprentice, has to manage his delicate health and is often ill — the Workshops balance report — excellent — was completed no more than three days ago.
This is only a brief and partial explanation for the reasons why the compilation of our general Financial Statement was delayed.
As for the results, they are good, better in effect than the earnings reported in the 1915-16 Financial Statement. But on the other hand, because I thought it prudent to stockpile all the paper, other primary materials, and fuel I could, at prices.... spiked by the war, the dividend to distribute to the Shareholders will again be 5% as in the previous financial year — and that dividend, as a matter of available cash flow, will not be payable before this upcoming 15 December.
I believe the Shareholders Meeting will be held early next month, and I do hope you are willing to contribute your advice and suggestions that — in these extremely difficult times — will be so valuable.
