Assente, solo oggi posso rispondere alla di Lei lettera 1 corr/.
Sarei disposto ad assumerla nella Amministrazione delle nostre Officine, non dubitando affatto, per qualche notizia già avuta, che le informazioni a di Lei riguardo risulteranno ottime.
Tuttavia mi si presentano alcune difficoltà per le quali non posso, sul momento, deliberare: abituato a parlare ed agire con franchezza non ho difficoltà poi da parte mia a farle sapere che per deliberare devo prima modificare la pianta degli impiegati, senza recare nocumento ad alcuno, ciò essen[do] contrario alle mie abitudini. Inoltre, appunto per tale ragione, non so se il compenso che pei primi anni potrei offrire alla di Lei attività venga da Lei accettato.
Molto volontieri farò la di lei personale conoscenza: mi faccia sapere quali giorni, quali ore sono più facili in riguardo a’ suoi impegni – e ciò è utile pure a me, che qualche gita alla campagna faccio ancora durante questo mese: non vorrei essere assente.

Having been away, I am able to respond only today to your letter of the 1st of this month.
I would be disposed to hire you in the Administration of our Workshops, having no reason whatsoever to doubt the various excellent accounts of you that I have received.
Nevertheless, I am faced with various difficulties which prevent me from deliberating for the moment: accustomed as I am to speaking and acting frankly, I have no difficulty telling you that in order to deliberate I must first modify the organizational structure of the personnel without causing harm to anyone, which is contrary to my way of doing things. Further, for this very reason I do not know if you would accept the compensation I could offer you for your first few years of employment.
I will in any case be quite willing to make your personal acquaintance. Please let me know what days and hours are easiest for you with respect to your work obligations, and this will be useful for me, since this month I will still make an occasional visit to the countryside and I would not want to be absent when you come.
