Illustre Maestro .

Milan, 2 January 1889

Illustrious Maestro ,

You ask me why I have not written to you?.... Frankly, I will tell you it is because it did not seem opportune to do so. When called to a meeting of the Committee, I declared that I had not the slightest desire to try to exercise any influence over Verdi in any way, be it even with a simple plea. Even so, if from my humble perspective I might have thought Signor Corti ’s visit to be inopportune, I would have immediately telegraphed you in advance. Instead, although I believed then that as a matter of prudence it would be inconvenient to announce Otello as part of the season, I just as firmly believe that now the moment is most favorable, and that a good performance can be obtained: everyone is absolutely delighted!!.....

Surely you have no need to be reassured that I will see that all of the orders you give me are scrupulously followed. We are fortunate to have an expert stage technician and a scenographer who work in complete agreement with one another, unlike the dog-and-cat rapport there was between Ferrario and Caprara ; many things that once seemed impossible can therefore be achieved, thanks to this spirit of cooperation.

I have written to Boito about the 3rd Act, and I will be sure to relay his response to you without delay. Meanwhile, allow me to shout: Hurrah! hurrah!... for our grand Otello – and I will dedicate myself body and soul to ensuring your satisfaction.

Again my heartfelt greetings and warmest affection to you and Signora Peppina , from your grateful and devoted

Giulio Ricordi
