Carissimo Illica,

Aff. Suo

CLET001748

25 September 1901

Dearest Illica,

I received your letter..... which, in the manner of a true poet, has no date, but which I see from the postmark is from the 22nd. It seems to me that we are losing precious time in this cut-and-thrust exchange, which yields no practical result!.... Briefly put, we create abstractions based on how we see things, or how others seem to think; and after we squeeze them dry, what’s left?... nothing! – “That one heard it said....” “This other one would sooner bite off your testicles!” – “Probably he meant to allude to....” “From all reports, this fellow was able to ensure that....” – Meanwhile time slips by.... and nothing truly useful gets done: collaborators suspicious of one another, or openly at war.... and so on. And it is precisely since this new system began that the months and years pass, with nothing to show for it! – I’m not referring to you, who are always a prodigious worker, tireless – productive! – but in the end, you too suffer from an atmosphere that has grown deleterious, I might almost say... putrid. Oh!... for god’s sake, can’t you and I put an end to this state of affairs?.... Oh! for god’s sake, is it possible that between us we aren’t capable of telling these gentlemen – whether they’re artists or not, be they rabble-rousers, peons, hustlers, etc. etc. – enough of this – either keep to a serious discussion of artistic matters or go to the devil?..... If we do this, I hope and believe that we can return to the halcyon days of Bohème, of Tosca, we can even say of Iris. Would that I could also say this of Germania.... but here we are with two authors [composer and librettist] engaged in all-out combat....... which only exerts a negative influence and wastes time that is more precious than ever, seeing how things stand right now. And yet wouldn’t it be genuinely and solely in the interests of everyone involved to work together willingly, so that the finished opera is completely successful?...

Enough.... just yesterday Franchetti, Tito, and Hohenstein met with me to discuss the scenes. Hohenstein presented all four set designs: 3 of them magnificent, and one certainly beautiful but requiring some modification! – Naturally your absence was lamented!...

Now we’ve come to the 3rd act, of which I have a fairly precise idea at this point. We’ll need:

1. The verses, more or less as I have set them roughly to the music that is already sketched out. You’ll see that it won’t take much effort.

2. I can’t make sense of the first scene for Worms that opens the act. Franchetti left this piece behind in Baden-Baden!!! – but you, a poet who keeps his papers well organized, will have the original. In your libretto I find a major scene here for Worms, but it does not correspond to what I see in the music, and indeed Franchetti told me that you had written a new one. I would ask you to kindly make a copy and send it to me.

As for the libretto itself, I’ll spare you a good bit of the boring work by comparing your manuscript page for page with the music, putting things together as best I can; then I’ll have this first draft typeset so that you’ve got a clear and precise idea of how the libretto is scored and you can trim, polish, enhance, etc. etc. as you see fit.

   Is that acceptable for you?....

Concerning the contracts, I don’t believe it’s possible for me to modify any of the language in the one between you and Franchetti, which was laid out with formulas reflecting standard usage. The phrase “e simili” [and the like] refers to introits that change names from country to country, for instance “percentuali” in Italy, “droits d’auteurs” in France, and “tantièmes” in Germany. But I don’t know if these “simili” include the composer’s fee for granting the rights to his score. In addition, I am not obliged to draw up a totally ab novo contract with Franchetti, but only to state in the encapsulated version of the previous ones that the projected opera is “Germania”.

At best, in order to avoid delays, it can be established by letter that the percentage you are owed is paid to you directly by the publisher. But we can write to each other about that later, or better we can speak directly. But.... the true dessous du panier [bottom line] everyone wants is a solid, genuine, unadulterated success that makes for plenty of rentals..... and healthy semester earnings reports. Here and nowhere else is the ripened fruit to be harvested from the plant..

As for Mascagni..... what can I tell you?.... I always welcome your proposals, and if you think the new subject is more appropriate..... all the better!!

To be sure... the one who has worked and continues to work is you.... as far as what Giacosa has done.... certainly he was not inclined to perspire.... and the only thing to be said for Mascagni.... is that there has not even been a hint of sweat.... if not cold sweat.. because certain symbolic phrases I don’t understand, which means I don’t understand the significance of “This is still not what the public wants from me”. You can easily understand that I myself have no way of knowing what the public wants from Mascagni; but if you want my simple, sensible shopkeeper’s opinion, I believe that the public will want a beautiful, clear, inspired, moving opera!!... These ingredients are not added as a pinch of this and that from the spice rack, but rather they naturally flow from the composer’s brain!.... I have always believed and continue to believe that they are there in Mascagni’s brain.... but if then we start talking about opera, as a work of art... as a commercial work...... in terms of silken harmonies.... of melodic canvases, with an instrumental adjustment of 7 ½ %.... this is the language of supermen, and I belong with the idiots and don’t understand a thing.

As for Mascheroni.... he was a complete fool to tempt fate by venturing directly into the lion’s den!!... But it doesn’t matter: let’s just say that the opera is marvelous, it’s well written!.... time cannot help but render justice to both Mascheroni and his Lorenza.

But you.... make me write volumes... I could almost say you make me waste a lot of time; but... this is not the case. At least it gives me the opportunity to extend my cordial greetings to you once again.

Yours warmly,

Giulio Ricordi
