Dear friend,
Yesterday I received the following information from someone whom I consider reliable and who had come from Rome, regarding our friend of the Banca di Milano, who plans to visit you in a few days in Paris, which I feel I should pass on to you because you too had raised some concerns when last we spoke. It would appear then that in Rome, where our friend just opened his new bank, he encountered a climate that was not exactly favorable: he was reproached for being ever more tightly associated with your close friend in Paris, and also for wanting — like him — to squeeze every possible advantage, both for himself and for his Bank, from any business proposal that crosses his desk. In addition, the fact of having chosen a President who is hardly considered a saint in England does nothing to help things there, and it's been said that the most reputable banks he approached have refused to do any business because of the name at the head of the Board of Directors.
You hardly need a greenhorn (!!) like me warning you to be careful, but since our friend will certainly come to see you during his upcoming trip to Paris, I thought it best to pass along this information from a reliable source.
With my most cordial greetings, I remain
yours warmly

Caro amico,
