Dear Giacomo,

   Forgive me for not responding sooner.

   I've been to see Niccodemi, who showed me what he had already done [on Tabarro], but he told me he was uncomfortable working behind Adami's back — according to him, he thinks the best thing would be for you to authorize him to speak to Adami, perhaps proposing that his years of living in Paris and experience with the local argot could provide some particular turns of phrase and that touch of authenticity which are essential for the characters and the subject.

   I think Niccodemi is right, and if you are of the same opinion write to him directly at 9, via S. Andrea — otherwise, ask him to send the provisional libretto back to you, since I'll be leaving shortly for Rome, then returning to Milan for a week before going to Paris.

   I learned from Adami and from Clausetti that you are orchestrating what you've already written — good — but in that case, do you really think Niccodemi would be indispensable? or rather that Adami alone will suffice if he were to return to work with you at Torre? If you like, I could make a quick trip to Torre from Rome (next Thursday or Friday) to get together with you and Adami — send me a letter or wire — I'll be leaving Milan on Monday evening.

   And the other subject? have you found it?
