In response to your kind letter of the 9th of this month, my thanks to you first of all for your solicitude and your valuable suggestions.
I believe it is absolutely necessary for our Paris representative to maintain an independent position: in other words, he must be the Manager of our branch office, and nothing more. With regard to the other questions you raise, I will respond soon: I wanted to write you first to explain the situation in general, and now I will study it in detail.

In the name of my company I have therefore arranged to send you an Italian bronze, which I am certain you will find a handsome addition to your drawing room. I have also been charged on Verdi’s behalf with sending you something that will be a daily reminder of his gratitude!... In risposta alla sua gentile del 9 corr./ – e ringraziandola prima di tutto per la sua sollecitudine e i suoi preziosi suggerimenti.
Ritengo assolutamente necessario che il nostro rappresentante a Parigi conservi una posizione indipendente: intendo dire che deve essere il Gerente della nostra succursale, e niente altro. Per le altre domande che lei mi pone, le scriverò presto; le ho scritto prima di tutto per spiegarle la cosa in generale: adesso la studierò in dettaglio. =
E’ fuor di dubbio che la posizione economica della persona scelta potrà migliorare via via che saprà sviluppare gli affari – ed è per questo motivo che la persona in questione non potrà né dovrà occuparsi che della nostra ditta. Alla fin fine, quello che cerco è un sostituto, al posto del nostro attuale rappresentante, che appunto non si occupa abbastanza dei nostri affari: questo, l’ho potuto constatare svariate volte.
Lei mi scrive di avere quasi terminato i conti del processo Traviata-Trouvère – la prego di fare tali conti il più presto possibile: Verdi mi scrive due, tre [volte] la settimana, per chiedermi se tutto è finito.
E visto che parlo di quest’affare, mi rivolgo adesso non più al Sig.r Souchon, ma a un buon amico della nostra ditta, che ha avuto così tante noie e grattacapi, è a questo amico che dico: consenta a me e a Verdi di darle una testimonianza della nostra amicizia, sotto forma di un souvenir, e risponda con uguale amicizia accettandolo.
Le invio dunque a nome della mia ditta un bronzo artistico italiano, il quale, non potrei esserne più certo, le sarà gradito di veder fare bella figura nel suo salotto. Da parte di Verdi sono stato incaricato di inviarle qualcosa che glielo faccia ricordare ogni giorno!... Ma, ahimé, lei sa come vanno le promesse: questo invio non è pronto!... ci vuole ancora qualche giorno.
La sola cosa che desidero, caro Sig.r Souchon… è che voglia gradire questi souvenirs come testimonianza di amicizia e stima.
