Dear Maxwell,
attached you will find the contract for Madama Butterfly duly signed by me. As I wired you in London, I would ask that you deliver the sum of 300 dollars to Mr. Belasco on my behalf, and I will repay you on the first possible occasion.
I will write to Gatti-Casazza and ask for a decision regarding Francesca at the Metropolitan. It's my impression that Julien is a complete fiasco, which makes me fear therefore that Gatti-Casazza will insist on having Francesca — I say fear, because if it's true that Toscanini no longer wants to come to New York, his absence would be a considerable loss for the performance of Francesca; then too, I'm not particularly enthusiastic about Caruso in the role of Paolo, and I don't think either Bori or Farrar can carry off the part of the protagonist. You are wrong, on the other hand, to believe that the troupe in Boston will be inadequate: Russell absolutely promised me that he will engage Muratore and Cavalieri for Francesca; and with Weingaertner as conductor, I'm convinced the performance cannot but promise to be an excellent one.
Russell should be in Milan ten days from now, but before then I hope to see Gatti in order to know exactly what he wants to do and what guarantees he can give us regarding the performance. If Gatti absolutely insists on having Francesca, I hope I can convince him to let the same opera go to Boston as well. If we cannot agree on Francesca, I hope to get him to accept L'Amore dei Tre Re.
Here's hoping the crossing was comfortable and that the weather in New York in no way resembles the scorching heat here in Milan.
With best wishes from the entire family, believe me always
yours warmly

RACCOMANDATA
Caro Maxwell,
